Wall Tiles - Does Bigger Always Mean Better?

We often see large format floor tiles and have accepted that as the norm but what about larger wall tiles?

Large format wall tiles are becoming increasingly popular in today’s interiors due to more modern homes opting for contemporary styles. Kitchen wall tiles have moved away from the traditional 100x100mm size and bathrooms are also seeing more sleek and flowing design options. Subsequently, 600x300 is also an acceptable size for a wall tile now and every size in between.

One of the advantages of large format wall tiles is that there is less grout which makes the whole effect a lot smoother and sleeker. The other bonus to having fewer grouting lines results in less maintenance which will keep your room looking fresher for longer. Furthermore, when done correctly, large format tiles can make rooms flow throughout the property and are especially effective in open plan living spaces.

However, there are some drawbacks- one of the main disadvantages of large format wall tiles are that when used in the wrong space, they can make rooms seem smaller. In this instance if you have a smaller space one thing you can do to combat this is to use light coloured tiles that reflect the light, especially in a glossy finish as this will encourage light around the space. If using darker colours- go for shades with a softer undertone that will envelop you into the room rather than making it feel small and cold.

A further drawback is that larger format wall tiles are also considerably heavier than smaller tiles- this can lead to implications with the tiling. If you are unsure and do not know what you are doing it may be worth getting a professional in. although they can seem costly, it’s a lot less than what you may have to pay later on down the line to rectify a mistake.
